In order to enhance the sense of community among researchers in social epistemology during the period of the spread of COVID-19, the Social Epistemology Network is initiating a series of weekly online "mini-event" meetings of one hour, held on Zoom, in which researchers from around the world give brief presentations of their work-in-progress. We are calling this series the "Social (Distance) Epistemology" series. Any researcher in social epistemology can submit an abstract to be considered for presentation; the form to do so is .
Abstracts should be no more than 100 words, including at least one and no more than three key terms.
TOPICS: Any topic in social epistemology, very broadly construed, is welcome. Please refer to the "Welcome" message of the Social Epistemology Network page to have a sense of the range of topics that fall within this wide umbrella.
SELECTION: The administrators will take all of the submissions and will determine what themes emerge. We will set up theme-oriented mini-events, announced on this site, to be held on Zoom, accessible to all. We will notify the speakers prior to each event. The URL for the meeting will be announced on the Social Epistemology Network facebook page.
ORGANIZATION OF MINI-EVENTS: each weekly mini-event will last no more than 75 minutes, with each speaker getting no more than 10 minutes to give her/his/their presentation, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A for each presentation. The Q&A will use the Q&A function on the Zoom webinar format, so that anyone who wishes to submit a question can do so, and questions will be read aloud by the moderator. All questions will be published after the event, so that the speakers can make use of all of them (even if we didn't get a chance to read all of them). Each mini-event will be open to anyone who . (Those having difficulties pre-registering should contact Sandy Goldberg at to get access to the URL.)
WORK-IN-PROGRESS: this aims to be a work-in-progress event. We take that seriously. No one will be held to the views expressed in the sessions.
RECORDING: the presumption will be that each mini-event will be recorded and made available on this site as well as on the Social Epistemology Network facebook page. This is for the benefit of folks who can't make the mini-event itself. Any participant who would prefer not to be recorded should let us know ahead of time (and of course we will grant your wish!). We will look into closed captioning for the hearing impaired.
PARTICIPATION as an audience member: Please note (what was mentioned above) that participation in any of these meetings requires . Those who are not pre-registered will not have access to the URL.
FOLLOW-UP: we encourage participants (both speakers and observers) to follow up with one another afterwards, and we especially encourage group discussion of topics on this facebook page. The aim is to enhance our sense of community in these trying times.
